Steve Karges' Testimony:
50 years in Christ
by Steve Karges
SAN DIEGO, CA, June 4, 2017, -- Fifty years ago today, my life was changed forever! On June 4, 1967, I walked down the aisle of my childhood church and received Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord. I was nine years old.
On that Sunday around 12 noon, there were no bells or whistles, no bright lights or thundering noises, but my life was transformed! All my sin (past, present, and future) was transferred to Christ (who sacrificially died in my place), and His righteousness was transferred to me. Through the work of Christ on the cross, I was justified before a Holy God and adopted into His family. I am undeserving of God’s grace and did nothing to earn it. My salvation is a gift from the Triune God.
“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21, NASB)
I immediately followed Christ command to be baptized (immersed), which took place before the congregation at the church, as a public statement of my faith in His life, death, and resurrection.
Today, I experience God’s unconditional love when I feel unworthy, joy when my heart is broken, peace during life's raging storms, hope in disappointment and guidance through His Word and indwelling Holy Spirit, when I need a personal GPS. Jesus meets every need and He has brought meaning, purpose, and direction to my life.
Through Christ, I have the strength to stand-up again when I stumble or get knocked down, because I know the foe is defeated, victory is certain, and my future is secured forever.
I am not perfect -- just ask my wife! I am simply someone who was lost and God found. I am grateful He came looking for me and reached out in love! I am glad I reached back by faith.
“But we had to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found.” (Luke 15:32, NASB)
Fast forward fifty years to 2017 and I am a children's pastor with a global ministry. I have learned from God’s Word and from my own experience, that God awakens His chosen ones (some during childhood) to understand the Gospel, repent of sin, believe in Christ, and then to follow Him for the rest of their lives.
This is a day to celebrate Jesus, to the glory of God the Father!
